From the developer behind Yukar From The Abyss, “Dark Fantasy x Suspense” otome Volontés first captured my attention with its lovely artwork and a trailer with a hauntingly beautiful opening theme. I’d seen a few posts about Volontés in the r/otomegames subreddit over the past year or so, so I was really excited to start this one.

The story begins with heroine Fiena losing everything. Near death, she is rescued by a man who proclaims that she is the Moon Witch, a priestess said to bring peace and happiness to the people. As a young woman who has worked on a farm all her life, she finds this new place overwhelming due to its prosperity.

Fiena was taught to read and write by a traveling priest in her village, but in the kingdom of Ombrelle she has access to a much more extensive education. She starts off in the lowest level of magic classes with kids, but she’s very grateful for this opportunity, and quickly works her way up to her age group’s level over the course of a year.

They do show us some scenes of Fiena’s education and her duties as the Moon Witch during that year, but they wrote in a time skip – presumably because her education, while important, isn’t the focus of the story. She gets used to her new home, so naturally that’s when things start to go wrong.

On the surface Ombrelle seems like paradise; unlike in Fiena’s village and the surrounding lands, no one goes hungry or dies of a magical “plague” due to the kingdom’s isolation. However, there is always the risk of an invasion by the kingdom of Molrois, which historically has persecuted the people of Ombrelle due to their religion and use of magic. Internal threats pose a problem as well.

During each love interest’s route, Fiena will investigate one of those issues by their side. She is used to hard work due to her life on the farm, and can now wield magic plus an axe, which I think is a fairly unusual weapon for a woman to use. 💪

***Besides Teuta (BUSTAFELLOWS) and Anastasia (even if TEMPEST) I don’t remember any other redheaded (Switch) otome heroines, so it’s nice to have Fiena join the ranks of the redheads as well!***

Fiena is also pretty shrewd for being a “simple farm girl.” She recognizes when people are trying to use her, and does her best to take advantage of them in return. I liked how perceptive she was, and how she was able to eventually connect the dots in each storyline.

There are 4 love interests in Volontés, and they each have a happy ending, a “plunder” ending, and a tragedy ending – in addition to about 2 bad endings per route. I appreciated that they didn’t write a ton of the sudden bad endings, instead concentrating more on the impactful ones. I believe there were CGs for each happy, plunder, and tragedy ending, which were quite nice to have.

I played in the officially recommended play order, so I started with Emmanuel. He’s very pretty, but he’s cold and distant – even to people he’s considered friends. I couldn’t really see how Fiena would fall for him because of the way he’s treated her before (and his way of thinking). Emmanuel’s not a bad guy, but in his job he deals with things way too harshly, in my opinion.

His ending felt anticlimactic, but I really enjoyed Emmanuel’s silly extra story. It was also cool to see how Fiena comes up with some strategic political maneuvers later in his route in order to help him with his position. Political intrigue remains an important theme in the game.

Ismail was probably one of my favorite love interests here. He primarily works as the royal physician. Because of his relationship with the king, he has certain privileges and can contribute his medical healing expertise to investigations that may require it.

He gets involved in some shady situations, but despite his occasionally suspicious behavior he’s quite kind to Fiena. The way their romantic relationship developed was a lot better than was the case in Emmanuel’s route. Like the other happy endings, Ismail’s is somewhat bittersweet in a way, but I think his tragedy ending could be the saddest one in the game. They did a really good job of tugging at my heartstrings!

Melodie, or Mel, is the next love interest. I remember part of his story being easy to predict even in earlier routes. Mel is a fascinating character across routes (and the different endings) though. He’s a major grump who isn’t afraid to speak his mind, which results in some pretty entertaining dialogue.

Even though socializing clearly irritates Mel, he still helps Fiena and is kind to her in his own way. Mel’s plunder ending was not completely terrible, and actually felt like a plausible alternative outcome. His happy ending was definitely a little sad too, but it also might be the most intriguing one with the most potential. And while I was entertained by Emmanuel’s short story, Mel’s was absolutely hysterical!

Our final love interest would be Olivier, the cunning Grand Sorcier of the kingdom. He’s the one who found Fiena and announced her as the Moon Witch. Olivier and Mel are the more chaotic characters across routes, while Emmanuel and Ismail are more…stable? 😂

Although Olivier is perhaps of dubious morality, he was my other favorite love interest. I liked how he was willing to give up on his schemes to keep Fiena safe. He’s very protective and possessive of her. I thought that his plunder ending was the most disturbing (but not because of anything Olivier did).

There’s a special character ending in Olivier’s route, which could have been interesting but ultimately felt superfluous because of how short it was. I wish they had expanded on that ending more. Olivier’s short story was also a little boring. But interestingly enough, despite his chaotic nature Olivier’s happy ending was probably the safest, most stable ending.

I enjoyed playing through each route, but one issue I had was that while the common route felt like it was a reasonable length, the love interest’s stories seemed just a little short. That being said, I also thought it was smart of the writers to use a time skip that provides a reasonable explanation for Fiena’s growth and the development of the romantic relationships.

Overall I was impressed with the writing in Volontés. The world-building with the different religions and magics was really interesting, and I liked the characters. This game actually has one of my favorite side characters in an otome, which is Marie (Fiena’s assigned handmaid in the castle). Fiena was a great heroine, and Marie was an extremely entertaining side character.

Marie was apparently raised as part of the nobility, but she’s very rowdy and quick to get into fights of both the physical and verbal variety. I was like two seconds into meeting her for the first time and I already loved her. Marie is very loyal to Fiena, and she has some hilarious scenes in Emmanuel’s route, as well as in Mel’s route (which adds her siblings to the mix).

Auguste could have been a stronger side character, but Omari was a nice mentor for Fiena. And I really liked Ciara because she was compassionate, intelligent, and strong in the scenes she was in. It was great to see that all of the female characters in the game were strong.

The characters were visually appealing, too. I think the backgrounds are gorgeous, and the music was excellent. “Les Dernières Volontés” (the opening theme) is fantastic with the vocals, and the “愉快な仲間” and “紫色の戦慄” tracks were my other favorites. The dialogue in the game is voice acted, which is especially impressive considering that this is an indie otome.

Volontés’ main weakness is a slightly shorter length, but other than that I’d say there aren’t any major negatives from my point of view. They wrote stories with romance and hatred, and tragedies yet also triumphs. I really felt emotionally (and intellectually) invested in this world, and would love to see a fan disc with more about the characters, Molrois and the Sentria Church, and definitely Ruyasehir as well.
