I don’t usually consume much media involving vampires, but the cute retro-style graphics in Flora & Fang: Guardians of the Vampire Garden made me want to give this arcade platformer a try. Play by yourself as one of the vampire siblings, or use both in local co-op mode with a friend!

The game opens with a fun little voiced rhyme that briefly introduces our characters and their story. For some reason, Dracula has a garden. (Does he eat the vegetables? Or are they for his future victims? 🤔) He asks his children to protect the garden while he’s away.
I was only able to play in single player mode, so I played as Fang by default. (I couldn’t figure out if I could switch to Flora, so I don’t know if she has different abilities.) Bugs will descend from above and attempt to eat the pumpkins on the platforms in each level.

As you advance through the levels, more types of bugs will appear. After you’ve cleared the levels on the first screen, you’ll encounter bugs who can set the pumpkins on fire! 😱 Your job is to hit them with your bug spray several times to get rid of them before they can make off with the pumpkins. (They must be pretty strong to lift them! 😂)

You only have 3 hearts worth of health, so you can only take 3 hits before you lose. I thought this made it pretty challenging since I’m not always the most coordinated person. To make things easier, some spirits occasionally appear with a variety of potions, which often decrease the number of times you must spray a bug until the potion’s effects wear off.

Additionally, you can collect coins in each level. Sometimes balloons also float onscreen, and if you pop 5 balloons with a combination of the letters in “BONUS” you get to play through a bonus level for even more coins. There are several different types of bonus stages.

One of the later stages on the first screen has a store where you can purchase equipment that will permanently improve your spray or speed. You can replay the earlier levels to earn more coins for these items.
Your performance is scored and ranked from S-F. Each level has a star you can earn, and there’s apparently a leaderboard. I started out with strong performances, and then I earned E or F ratings for at least half of the levels on the first screen.

I’m admittedly not always the most skilled at playing platformers, but I think this could pose a nice challenge for some players. It took several tries to defeat the first boss, but I did manage to get through it. Despite my lack of skill, I did enjoy my experience with Flora & Fang. The concept is silly and fun, and really reminded me of the arcade games I played as a kid.
