Last year I reviewed Agnostiko ORIGINS, a Filipino Metroidvania from developer Singles Alliance. They’ve now released Agnostiko VS, the fighting game sequel in which players can control beings from Filipino folklore.

You start with 12 playable characters with unique signature moves, unlocking an additional option as you complete a series of battles with each character. There are around a dozen back-to-back fights for each playable character, and you start each fight with a full bar of HP. A more challenging mode where you continue on to the next fight with your remaining HP could have been fun.

It takes about 15 minutes to beat the full roster of enemies for one character. I think the order of enemies stays the same when you replay the same character. I button mashed a lot and was able to get through fights pretty easily; perhaps higher difficulties could be added?

Similar to Agnostiko ORIGINS, I wish this had a section that explained the folklore behind each character. I did like how they gave us some story for each time we successfully complete the game with each character in the roster.
Agnostiko VS is fairly simple but it’s not bad. It’s said to be inspired by “16-bit era fighters, especially the legendary Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen [on] Sega Genesis.” The graphics are certainly reminiscent of retro games. I think the text could be easier to read, and some of the English could be improved, but I liked some of the moving details in the backgrounds of the fighting stages.
I really appreciate the retro inspirations for the games by Singles Alliance. They also have a unique point of view due to their Filipino influences! Check out their games and see if they look like something you’d enjoy.
