Skies Above is a 2D action game in which players must destroy waves of flying robots to protect the Leviathans you’re meant to help escape. These giant creatures came to our planet to rest after a long journey through space. Naturally, once humans discovered that the Leviathans possessed magic, they tried to capture them to exploit them for their energy.
Humans now use flying orb robots to weaken Leviathans and capture them. Standing in their way is a group of rebels who wish to protect nature; they use the Leviathan magic as well, but not in an exploitative manner.

Sliding and jumping through the air as the Leviathan floats higher and higher, destroy the robots attacking them and do your best to help them survive until the Charge Bar fills up at the bottom of the screen. Once that’s full, you can move on to the next level.

If you fail to keep the Leviathan alive, you’ll be sent back to base with coins, shards, and essence to use on upgrades for your next attempts. Possible upgrades include an increase in the Leviathan’s max life, an increase in their charge-up speed, and more.

You unlock new upgrades and features for your “base” and Leviathan after you upgrade the tree there, and also after making it to the next cloud layer. (There are also challenges to complete for rewards, plus achievements). When you unlock fishing at the base, you can catch some to feed the whale for a temporary buff for the next run.
I had a hard time getting used to the “combat” at first, and couldn’t figure out how to summon the meteor, but I managed to get through to the fourth cloud layer. You’ll encounter new types of robots with different attacks as you make your way through cloud layers, which makes it more difficult.

Gameplay is fairly simple but kind of addictive because of the amount of unlockables in the game. It was amusing and satisfying to see the Charge Bar fill almost immediately for the first 2 layers after I upgraded it a ton. And I especially liked the cosmetic rewards – I’d love to see a top hat, monocle, and twirly mustache added at some point! 😉
I love whales, so this was a fun one for me to get into; I love the leviathan design, the opening images for the story, and a lot of the color choices. The music that plays during each run is really catchy and energetic. Skies Above has some great elements going for it, and at under $10, it’ll provide players with several hours of entertainment.
