Kickstarters To Watch – February 6, 2022

We especially love indie games here, so we want to continue sharing and supporting Kickstarters attempting to bring more great games to Nintendo Switch. Here are some of the latest campaigns we’ve seen:

GigaSword

GigaSword, as the name implies, has you carry around a humongous sword that weighs you down. Inspired by the likes of Shovel Knight, The Legend of Zelda, and Axiom Verge, the game is an action-puzzle metroidvania where you use your huge sword to help you solve puzzles and get around – and also beat up your enemies, of course. Once you put down your sword, you’ll be much lighter (which makes sense, since it was meant to be used by an eight foot tall “owl man”). This allows you to actually jump higher and swim without being weighed down so much.

Without your sword though, you can’t attack enemies and protect yourself, so you will have to be careful. But the game will have a feature that allows you to transport the sword around the environment since you wouldn’t be able to carry it and climb. I like the concept of the gameplay, and the story also seems neat, with conflict between humans and owl-like creatures called Nocturnes. The Kickstarter campaign offers a variety of cool rewards like a digital artbook, a T-shirt, keychains, pins, and more! Be sure to support the lone developer Jack Breen if this looks like something you’d like – let’s get the Switch stretch goal unlocked!

GigaSword currently requires nearly $33,000 for its initial funding goal, as they have obtained ~$6,800 out of the requested $40,000 so far. In order for a Switch port to become a reality, they’ll need $50,000 total (or another ~$43,000 on top of what they’ve already raised). The campaign ends in 25 days on March 3, 2022, so be sure to help them out by sharing and supporting them! Estimated delivery for the game is December 2023.

Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus

Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus has you play as the titular Bō, a “Tentaihana” – or “celestial blossom” – that looks like a cute little fox! 🦊 You’ll wield a shapeshifting bō staff in this 2.5D platformer/metroidvania game. The Kickstarter page mentions interesting inspirations ranging from Ōkami, Hollow Knight, Paper Mario, and Celeste to Spirited Away, Attack on Titan, and more!

will allow you to explore environments based on Japanese folklore, unlocking secrets as well as new abilities along the way. You unlock those new abilities by brewing and drinking different teas, which seems like a unique way to do that! I’m excited to meet the cast of yōkai and other characters based on Japanese culture! You’ll also be able to collect and modify daruma dolls to help (or hinder) you; I love games with collecting elements, so this sounds like fun! I also love the look of the adorable Bō plushie, which is one of the campaign’s add-ons.

currently has obtained approximately $82,000, surpassing its initial $35,000 funding requirement. The stretch goal for the Switch port has been met at the $45,000 mark. However, the campaign could still use some support for additional stretch goals. 25 days remain in the campaign, which ends on March 3, 2022. Estimated delivery appears to be September 2023.

Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends

Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends is a fascinating use of the now-public domain work by Winsor McCay, Little Nemo in Slumberland (1905). I’m not overly familiar with McCay’s works, although I’ve heard of Gertie the Dinosaur before, but I like quirky games like this that reference important aspects of pop culture! While there was apparently an NES game entitled Little Nemo: The Dream Master (1990), this game is meant to follow a different interpretation of Little Nemo.

This game is a 2D platformer with four different playable characters, who each have their own powers that can be used to create combos and discover hidden areas. Explore non-linear levels, find different hidden artifacts that strengthen your characters, and enjoy lovely hand-drawn animations. Your explorations can occur when Nemo is awake, but when he’s ready for bed, you can choose which world to dream about and explore! Inspirations for the game include Shantae, Demon’s Crest, and Little Samson. While the Kickstarter campaign ended in April 2021, you can still support the game through the BackerKit link below.

Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends was successfully funded at nearly $81,000, surpassing its $70,000 goal. Estimated delivery is October 2022.

Mina the Hollower

The above-mentioned GigaSword was inspired by Shovel Knight, and it just so happens that Yacht Club Games, the company behind Shovel Knight, is trying to bring another game to Switch! Mina the Hollower is an action/adventure game with 8-bit aesthetics reminiscent of Game Boy Color graphics. You’ll play as a mouse named Mina, an inventor and “Hollower” who helped develop technology to bring power to Tenebrous Isle. But now something has gone wrong with the generators, and Mina will have to travel around and fix them all.

Although Mina seems to wield a whip as her primary weapon, you’ll be able to find many different weapons and “trinkets” that provide you with different benefits when worn. The game will also include a leveling system where you find “Bones,” used as both your money and experience points. It says that there will be ways to lose your Bones, which is certainly an interesting mechanic. I love the cute character design for Mina, which serves as a nice contrast to this game inspired by the Gothic Horror genre! The campaign page says platforms aren’t final, but I sure hope this makes it to Switch like the mock-up images would suggest!

Mina the Hollower has obtained more than double its funding goal, currently sitting at around $688,000 versus its requested ~$312,000! There are additional stretch goals including a sound test mode and cheat codes. 25 days remain in the campaign, which ends on March 3, 2022. Estimated delivery appears to be December 2023.

Tyrant’s Blessing

In this tactical turn-based fantasy game, you must defeat the Tyrant, who wants to create a new world with no war, suffering, or death. A noble goal, but he unfortunately wants to do this by “blessing” everyone with immortality by using his Dead Army to turn them all into the undead. 😬 Any of your party members who fall in battle will also end up joining the Dead Army!

There are twenty unlockable characters for you to use, as well as some adorable pets that will help support you in battle. I can’t decide between the Husky, cat, panda, Guinea pig, or fox – so cute! An update on the Steam page indicates that every party member – including pets – will be given their own passive ability, and the Husky will apparently be the only unit capable of using their skills in water! I can’t wait to check out tactical battles with pets by my side! 🥰

Tyrant’s Blessing was successfully funded in May 2021, with nearly $37,000 in funding for their ~$20,000 campaign. Their Steam page estimates a Q1 2022 release date.

I have this posted elsewhere on the site, but if you are clicking directly on the article you may not see that I have indicated that I have no affiliation with any games or their developers/publishers unless otherwise stated. (Other than being a fan, follower, and supporter.) I make zero money for saying or posting anything here. I figured I should reiterate this given my gushing over these games. 😂 Please do check them out and support them if you like what you see though!
